Parent Kid Books about motherhood

What is motherhood?

A mother is the biological or social female parent of a child or offspring, while the male parent is the father. The maternal bond describes the feelings the mother has for her (or another's) child.

In the case of a mammal such as a human, the mother gestates her child (called first an embryo, then a fetus) in the womb from conception until the fetus is sufficiently well-developed to be born. The mother then goes into labour and gives birth. Once the child is born, the mother's breasts produce milk to feed the child.

In non-sexual organisms, "mother" can sometimes be used to mean "parent"; in the case of single-celled organisms that reproduce by fission, the mother is a cell that divides to produce "daughters".

Mothers typically have a very important role in raising children, and the title mother can be given to a woman other than a biological parent who fills this role. This is most commonly either an adoptive parent or a stepmother (the wife of a child's father). The term can also refer to a person with stereotypical traits of a mother.

Mother-Daughter Wisdom: Creating a Legacy of Physical and Emotional Health

Christiane Northrup

Bantam, 2005-02-22

Price: $28.00

It's a rare book that delivers so completely on such a broad promise. Mother-Daughter Wisdom is written to connect the dots between a number of separate parts: logical and emotional morality, physical and mental health, friends and family, and in an overarching sense, the relationship between being a woman's daughter and raising a daughter of your own.

Because of the scope of information presented, it can be tricky to pick up the book and look for quick guidance on a particular topic such as adolescent weight issues or childhood asthma; more use, and more pleasure, will be found if you add it to your permanent reference shelf to look through in stages. Author Dr. Christiane Northup (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom) seamlessly blends personal stories with clear research in a way that creates a compelling read from start to finish, even if the specific topic isn't necessarily one that concerns you. Information is a welcome mix of old school medical advice and new school nutrition and stress relief. In Northup's world, whole foods and loving communication can play just as important roles as antibiotics.

The book is categorized somewhat loosely by age, beginning with pregnancy and labor, and continuing through infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. Each section is quite specifically tuned to relating to daughters: Mothers of sons will get some use out of sections on breastfeeding, vaccinations and the like, but emotional concerns and physical recommendations are tailor-made for women and girls, right down to the resource guide that ends the book. By itself, that resource guide is an excellent starting point for further reading, both online and in print. When added to the whole, it is just one more reason you'll reach for the book on a regular basis. Jill Lightner

Reviews:

Read it and Pass it on
After the loss of my Mother I bought and read this book guided to it from originally watching Dr. Northrup on the PBS show. I read it slowly over months because it reminded me of so many memories and feelings that rushed through my mind during this very sad time in my life. I found I needed to think about what I read, process it and then go back to read more. I found this book extremely helpful in putting thoughts and memories in order. I found it opened up feelings I would otherwise not take time to process and more importantly the forgiving and understanding this book helped me process about my own mother and how I measured up in my opinion of being a mother myself.I was able to think about what I did right and wrong but more importantly learned how we all do our very best. This book brought me peace about my own Mother and within myself as a mom of adult children. I recommend this book hightly and will pass it on to important people in my life.
not for adult daughters and mothers

After hearing Christiane on PBS I really thought the c d package would be directed at developing a friendship with your mother after reaching adulthood. Why they act the way they do, how to see their words and actions through their eyes, understanding them and letting the pain they cause drop away. But this c d is directed at mothers with girls still living at home. How to raise them so they have self pride, integrity and can handle finances. Only the first tape talked about mothers and daughters over 35. It was a waste of my money.
An awesome lesson for all women to learn
I couldn't wait to get the book after seeing Dr. Northrup and her talk on PBS. I read the book twice to get as much info as i could and I am sure that I'll be reading it a few more times. As an expectant mother I am eager to learn as much as possible about the role and responsibility of motherhood, especially things that I didn't learn as a daughter. I don't fault my mother but we have both grown through the simple changes of thought that come from this book. I also highly recommend the PBS talk to take time to grow individually as both mother and daughter. A great read and a wise approach to motherhoood and daughterhood.
A Book for All Mothers and Daughters
I read this book as both the mother of a daughter and as a daughter. It offers a great perspective to both. This book is filled with gentle wisdom, insightful knowledge, and thoughtful challenges. Dr. Northrup is not afraid to answer the tough questions, occasionally questioning traditional practices in medicine. She thoughtfully discusses controversial subjects, such as vaccinating your child, discussing a mother's fears about such issues. I enjoyed her philosophical insights; she gave me much to think about! Dr. Northrup is one doctor you wish were in your HMO!
Wonderful and comforting
As always, Ms Northrup has written a wonderfully fulfilling and heart warming book! She helps us to look at our lives and those of our mothers and grandmothers in a new and comforting way. Your mind and soul will be eased of its pain and conflicts with past memories and/or experiences. It will help you to heal yourself and forgive both yourself and the women that came before you that left an impact on you and your life. I highly recommend this wonderful book for you, your mom and daughters!
