Parent Kid Books about motherhood

What is motherhood?

A mother is the biological or social female parent of a child or offspring, while the male parent is the father. The maternal bond describes the feelings the mother has for her (or another's) child.

In the case of a mammal such as a human, the mother gestates her child (called first an embryo, then a fetus) in the womb from conception until the fetus is sufficiently well-developed to be born. The mother then goes into labour and gives birth. Once the child is born, the mother's breasts produce milk to feed the child.

In non-sexual organisms, "mother" can sometimes be used to mean "parent"; in the case of single-celled organisms that reproduce by fission, the mother is a cell that divides to produce "daughters".

Mothers typically have a very important role in raising children, and the title mother can be given to a woman other than a biological parent who fills this role. This is most commonly either an adoptive parent or a stepmother (the wife of a child's father). The term can also refer to a person with stereotypical traits of a mother.

Jennifer Weiner, whose novels Good in Bed and In Her Shoes earned her a place among women's book club aficionados everywhere, proves she still has the touch with Little Earthquakes, a tale of love, heartbreak, redemption, and friendship. Weiner's novel centers around four new mothers, all of whom must learn to adjust their lives and their marriages to deal with the challenges of raising children.

Ayinde is a beautiful, biracial newscaster who moves to Philadelphia after her husband, a star player for the NBA, is traded to the 76ers. She meets Becky, an overweight chef who plays the "pregnant or just fat" game every time she passes a mirror, and Kelly, an overachieving event planner who has her whole life mapped out down to the most minute details, after going into labor at a prenatal yoga class. The three become fast friends, and come to rely on each other for everything from burping techniques to intense emotional support. The group grows to include Lia, a semi-famous Hollywood starlet who leaves her husband and returns to Philly after a sudden tragedy.

While Little Earthquakes may leave little to the imagination, and some of the characters are laughably stereotypical (the Mama's boy Jewish doctor and the cheating ball player, to name a few), it is Weiner's gift for creating compelling characters with whom her readers can identify that make her such a successful storyteller. --Gisele Toueg

Reviews:

enjoyed
I didn't think I would like this because new mom stories can be annoying (except for new moms) BUT i enjoyed it. It is really about 4 different women's stories who happen to meet because they are moms. I actually liked this book best out of all her books
Amazing Book...
This book is the best book I think I've ever read. Maybe a few years ago I wouldn't have been able to appreciate it as much, but since I am now a mother of a 17 month old daughter, I could really get into all of the characters in this book. Each character; Becky, Kelly, Ayinde, Lia, were so well developed and their storylines were each different yet they could each understand what the other was going through. Each of the women dealt with different things; a bad family life, a husband who was famous and got another woman pregnant, a psycho mother-in-law and the loss of a child, and they all got through it. It was very inspiring. For any woman who is a mother, read this book.
A must read for all new Moms! Excellent!
A female physician that I work with told me to read this book and didn't really give me too many of the details prior. Jennifer Weiner has since become one of my favorite authors because so much of what she writes speaks directly to me. I have a 20 month old son and as I read Little Earthquakes, I could see so much of myself in each of the 4 main characters who are also going through Motherhood. The experiences that the women have are so true to what Motherhood has brought me, both funny and not so funny.I recommended this book to all of my Mommy friends and am so glad my co-worker introduced me to this author. I am now reading another one of her books and it is fabulous!
Good Entertainment!
Like the title says, this book is pure and simple entertainment. Even if you're not pregnant/mom yet, it's a fun read. And, if you're way past that stage, you can still read it and reminisce the way things used to be. Either way, you get sucked into reading about the lives of 4 very different women, with atleast one thing in common. The story has been written in such an engaging and interesting way that it makes you want to go on reading and hope it never ends! Jennifer Weiner has a winner and I would highly recommend it.
Slow start.....good middle...good end
The more I read this book, the harder it was to put down. Weiner is an excellent writer that afforded me many a chuckle during this book. No, if you're not a parent or beyond the baby/toddler phases....it would still be a quick enjoyable read but not much more. But for those of us that still clearly remember pregnancy and the crazy months following, you will laugh at these woman and you will enjoy this book.
