Parent Kid Books about child rearing

What is child-rearing?

Parenting is the process of raising a child from birth until they reach adulthood. This task is usually done by the biological parents, but if the parents are unable or unwilling to provide care, the task is usually deferred to adoptive parents, foster parents, close relatives (including older siblings), godparents, or institutions (such as group homes or orphanages). An integral part of parenting is education of the child. (For further details on the education of children, see Education)

Raising Your Spirited Child: A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, Energetic

Mary Sheedy Kurcinka

Harper Paperbacks, 1998-04-01

Recently, temperament traits have come to the forefront of child development theory. In Raising Your Spirited Child, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's first contribution is to redefine the "difficult child" as the "spirited" child, a child that is, as she says, MORE. Many people are leery about books that are too quick to "type" kids, but Kurcinka, a parent of a spirited child herself and a parent educator for 20 years, doesn't fall into that trap. Instead, she provides tools to understanding your own temperament as well as your child's. When you understand your temperamental matches--and your mismatches--you can better understand, work, live, socialize, and enjoy spirit in your child. By reframing challenging temperamental qualities in a positive way, and by giving readers specific tools to work with these qualities, Kurcinka has provided a book that will help all parents, especially the parents of spirited children, understand and better parent their children.

A TERRIFIC FIND!!!
I bought the book in 1999 and couldn't put it down!

I thought I would never get a good nights sleep! I would put off going to the store for as long as I could, or have my husband watch him when I did go, otherwise...I NEVER knew what experience we were going to have. My son didn't sleep through the night what seemed like forever!!! I remember asking my mother (who had had 4 children) if I was cut out for this mom thing! My son was "challenging" from day one it seemed!~ My son did not like change in routine at all. After reading this book it clarified sooooo much and I was able to make minor changes and WHEW---what a difference!!
My son is almost 8yrs old now and this book is still on my night stand. My son's teachers say he is very bright a leader in his class and he is doing exceptional in school. From the advice of my sons teachers, I have read books on gifted children and I have found MANY similarities to "spirited children".
Read this book cover to cover it has lots of great advice and tips. It REALLY helped me appreciate my son for the bundle of energy he was and still is!
Raising Your Spirited Child
This book saved my self-esteem as a parent. I had read so many books and articles on discipline that did not apply or did not work on my daughter. I was constantly getting disapproving looks and comments from people who felt she was poorly-behaved and, obviously, poorly-parented. I was miserable and so was she. Finally, I got my hands on this book, and it was like turning on a light. The author explains why traditional discipline does not work with spirited children.

The book does not provide a magic formula to solve all the challenges associated with raising a spirited child but it gives a context within which a parent can nuture and discipline successfully. Most importantly, the author provides such support for parents of spirited children (which we so dearly need). The author always focuses on the positive aspects of spirited children. This is critical since most people will negatively label your child. If I could recommend any book to a struggling parent, it would be this one!!!
Most Helpful
So positive and specific in offering advice. I recommend it to anyone whether you have a "spirited" child or not.
Raising your sprites child
It had a lot of good infrmation in it. The only problem I had with it is it really did not apply to my child like I had hoped
A Relief
After two years of having my son's school tell me he was a 'problem' finally a book to tell us he isn't the problem. This is a guide on how to teach others to see that your child lives life more intensely than most. It teaches you a better depth of understanding, even opens your eyes to your very own spritied ways--after all, where do you think your child got it?!!!
I highly recommend this book to all parents that have very active busy children--they are living spirited. I recommed buying several copies--for elementary school principles, counselors, teachers, and other parents. It's truly been a life saver for us.
